    Research Interests

After qualifying as a social worker in 2012 I worked for 3 years in a hostel for homeless men as a mental health social worker in Dublin, Ireland. I then worked for 2 years as a Clinical Support Worker (employed as a youth mental health social worker) with a large voluntary agency which support the mental health needs of young people in Dublin, Ireland. My PhD research (with the Department of Psychology, Trinity College Dublin) is funded by Health Research Board as part of the SPHeRE scholarship programme. This research investigates whether Mindfulness based cognitive therapy is effective at improving psoriasis symptoms, anxiety, depression and wellbeing of psoriasis patients. This research also investigates and explores what the mechanisms of change might be in mindfulness practice, using a clinically modified Buddhist psychological model as a theoretical framework.

My main research interests are in the area of mental health (young person and adult), and homelessness, specifically: the effectiveness of mental health services; the psychosocial determinants of mental health; the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions with marginalised groups; improving access to supports for people who are marginalised; the impact of social media on young people; cyberbullying; access to mental health support; human rights and mental health/mental capacity legislation.
