    Research Statement

My research objective is efficiency and robustness in energy systems. My specific research interests are wind power, electricity and gas markets and power system efficiency at the distribution level using intelligent ICT,  energy storage, microgrids and electric vehicles. In addition I am also interested in network resilience to future proof against extreme weather events, global warming and European energy markets.

Prior to joining the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Queen’s University Belfast in 2011, Dr Foley worked in the School of Engineering in University College Cork. In 2008 Aoife returned to academia full-time as a lecturer and later as an Environmental Protection Agency Research Fellow in University College Cork after more than twelve years in industry. She worked for ESB International, Siemens, PM Group and SWS Energy primarily in project management roles on projects in energy, waste, pharmaceutical and telecommunications sectors. Dr Foley is a Chartered Engineer (2001), a Fellow of Engineers Ireland (2012) and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (2009).
