    Research Interests

I joined the University as a Lecturer (Education) in 2006. Since then my teaching has largely been with the School's Open Learning Programme in the subject areas of History and Politics.

My research interests centre on conflict and conflict transformation. I am particularly interested in the factors that help to generate conflict and the role that adult education can play in addressing such issues. My current research explores how long-term processes of “Othering” helps to generate communal tensions and an exploration of how history is used, alongside contemporary grievances, to maintain social divisions.

Related to this I am interested in processes of identity formation – particularly in national identities and nationalism.

My PhD, completed in 2013, explored the relationship between the Irish language and modern Irish nationalism.
