My current research focuses on applying theories of risk and uncertainty to translation. Risk is a construct that, perhaps surprisingly given its widespread application in scholarly research in social sciences, has until recently received little attention in the field of translation. My research is important in this context; firstly because resolving or mitigating risk and uncertainty is a key ingredient of any translation process; secondly because the consequences of poorly managed translation risk may impact several involved constituencies, involving the translator, his/her employer or commissioner, the end user(s) of the translation product, and, more generally, the linguistic cultures within which the source and target texts are embedded; and thirdly because commercial translation is increasingly being carried out with the aid of translation technologies, such as CAT (Computer Assisted Translation) and MT (Machine Translation) tools that have the potential to implant unmediated risk in translation processes. I examine this topic in depth, both through the traditional account of how values of indeterministic outcomes may be derived through the application of probabilities and values of associated outcomes, and by means of a broader analysis that also considers issues such as agency, intentions, rights, consent, and equity.
