    Research Statement

    My research focuses on the structure, mechanism and physiological roles of integral membrane transporter proteins that function in multidrug efflux in bacterial pathogens and parasites that afflict both livestock and humans, as well as those that play important roles in nutrient uptake and herbicide resistance in plants. This research has important implications for both global food security and human health. Current emphasis is placed on inner membrane antiporters of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) involved in multidrug resistance in Escherichia coli.

    My laboratory utilises a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art techniques to answer important questions pertaining to the structure and mechanism of membrane transporters.  These include X-ray crystallography, fluorescence spectroscopy and transport assays using whole cells, inverted vesicles and purified protein reconstituted into proteoliposomes.
