    Research Statement

    Research is primarly interested in understanding digital technology innovation implications for business and society. Two current strands of research interest in this regard are:

    1) Linking smart mobility to socio-economic regime transformation in smart cities: a role for social marketing 

    2) Linking market intelligence (focus on big data) with the capabilities and NPD of small businesses

    Research has previously considered digital technology innovation implications for:

    - Small business adoption

    - Marketing strategy 

    - Business models

    - Industrial markets

    A secondary area of research has been interested in strategic orientations, focusing on:

    - Market orientation

    - Market orientation combined with other orientations




    Professor Simmons is Director of Research at Queen's Management School. He is a member of the Senior Management Board of Queen's Management School. His research seeks to understand digital technology innovation implications for business and society and is published in leading academic outlets such as the Harvard Business Review.  Professor Simmons has won best paper awards at the British Academy of Management and Irish Academy of Management Conferences. He was a Council Member of the Irish Academy of Management and 2017 Conference Chair. His research has attracted approximately one million pounds stirling of external funding. Professor Simmons is currently Principle Investigator of a research project providing Tesco Clubcard big data to develop capabilities and NPD of firms from the agri-food sector - £296,336 funded by Invest NI and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs. This high impact project also involves work at a Director level with Tesco NI, Invest NI, Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and the Ulster Farmers Union among others. He also is lead academic on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (£144,509 funding) between Queen's Management School and Danske Bank UK focusing on big data and targeting of customers with a multi-channel banking offer.

    Professor Simmons is Visiting Professor at the University of Paraná in Brazil where he leads research seeking to understand the role of social marketing in linking smart mobility with socio-economic regime transformation in smart cities - focusing on city of Curitiba. He has also worked on funded research on tech innovation and marketing strategy with ESC Rennes School of Business in France.

    Research funding:
    1) 3 year ongoing research project funded by Invest NI and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (£296,336): researching how an increase in the level of market intelligence (focus on Tesco Clubcard big data) impacts the capabilities and NPD of small firms from the agri-food sector.

    2) Knowledge Transfer Partnership - June 2016-ongoing - Lead Academic (£144,509). Queen's Management School/ECIT partnering with Danske Bank. Big Data and market segmentation/targeting and postioning for a multichannel banking proposition.

    3) 3 year project funded by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (£116,663): researching how Tesco Clubcard Big Data impacts small food business market orientation.

    Professor Simmons previously led two Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (£199,488 UK Government funding) assisting small firms to adopt digital technologies in their business over a 2 year period. Research developed in part from these partnerships has been published in several small business and marketing Journals.

    Professor Simmons is a Peer Review College member of the Economic and Social Research Council (UK's leading research agency). He was Council member of the Irish Academy of Management and Chair of the 2017 Conference. Previously he was Session Chair: Management, Skills Development and Growth Issues Track, at the 32nd Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship conference, Liverpool, November, 2009.

    Professor Simmons was External Examiner for Birmingham Business School MBA, University of Birmingham. He was External Examiner for a PhD viva at Aston Business School, Aston University. He was also External Examiner for the MSc in Value Chain Management at Kent Business School, University of Kent.

    Professor Simmons was a Chartered Institute of Marketing Board member (Ireland Region). He joined the Judging Panel for the 2015 Annual Awards. He is a member of the judging panel of the 2019 Belfast Telgraph Business Awards. He is also a Board member of Mourne Heritage Trust (manage Mourne Mountain Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and is a member of the Board of Govenors of All Childrens Integrated Primary School in Newcastle, County Down.

    Professor Simmons was previously Director of the Queen's Execuive MBA He visited Thailand in 2015 to promote postgraduate courses and has written special features in the Ulster Business Magazine on the importance of the Queen's Executive MBA program for in efforts to rebalance the Northern Ireland economy.
