    Research Interests

Before joining Queens University Belfast Dr Hamill practised as both a contracting and a consulting Civil Engineer.  He has, since 1998, been a Senior Lecturer at the Queen’s University of Belfast, and has been actively involved in research into a number of areas.   His work is both experimentally and computationally based and he has received grants to the value of just over £1 million.  He has lead research into sediment scouring in harbours and the saline intrusion that occurs in estuaries, and has held awards from the EPSRC in these areas (GR/M36649/01, GR/L68513/01 and GR/G17745/01).  He has also led a number of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) projects. He has extensively used both Particle Image Velocimetry and Laser Induced Fluorescence in his experimental investigations, and the limited nature of the analysis software provided by these instrument manufacturers has meant that he has also obtained, over the past seven years, experience of image manipulation and analysis to compliment the standard output from these systems.  This expertise is being used to enhance the way experiments are conducted in groundwater flow problems, and will have a significant impact on the work within this proposal.  He has supervised 17 PhD students to completion, of these students eight have had significant numerical modelling components to their work and three have been involved in the salt water intrusion in freshwater estuaries.  He is currently supervising two PhD students working in the area of ground water flow using image manipulation and analysis as their core methodology.
