    Research Interests

    Dr. Justin YW Tian, BEng (Honour), MSc, PhD, is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Pharmaceutical Engineering Group, Queen’s University Belfast and Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellow (2019). He has completed his bachelor degree in the area of Macromolecular Materials and Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology (2006) and was awarded a Research Scholarship from Queen’s University to complete his PhD in Drug Delivery in School of Pharmacy under the supervision of Professors Gavin P. Andrews and David S. Jones (2012). His PhD project was a collaborative programme with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca UK (funded by Royal Society) to establish a systematic approach for design and development of stable amorphous solid dispersion formulations. 

    Dr Tian's research seeks to resolve several scientific problems of fundamental and economic significance that have strong pharmaceutical formulation design and process engineering aspects. They ranged from development of novel formulations (amorphous solid dispersion, nanoparticles) for continuous manufacturing, to the implementation of suitable analytical technologies and modelling. The current projects are mainly built upon previous experience with focuses shifting to thermodynamic modelling and nanotherapeutics. The interdisciplinary nature of the research requires both fundamental understanding of the underpinning principles and the development of platform-driven formulations.
