    Research Statement

    Dr Karen Bonner is a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at Queens University, Belfast. She is also a Research Associate of the Enterprise Research Centre providing support to the Demography and Innovation research themes. Her teaching and research interests have a policy focus and lie within the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) growth. Karen co-authors the UK Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report. She also has extensive experience utilising micro-data to examine aspects of firm performance in Northern Ireland and the UK.

    Karen gained her PhD from Aston Business School. She also has a First Class Hons Degree in Economics, and a Masters in Applied Economics, from Ulster University.


    Prior to joining Queen's Karen was a Senior Research Fellow at the Enterprise Research Centre within Aston Business School. She also previously worked as a Research Economist at the Economic Research Institute of Northern Ireland (formerly Northern Ireland Economic Research Centre) and as a Research Assistant at the First Trust Bank.

    Karen has extensive experience using micro-level data to understand firm level growth and performance and has recently undertaken a wide range of projects, to include programme evaluation, and analysis of firm behaviour and growth, for clients such as the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS); the British Business Bank; Goldman Sachs; Scottish Enterprise, Invest NI and Forfás.
