    Achievements and Distinctions

Dr Madjid Karimirad [BSc, MSc, PhD, Postdoc, CEng, MIMechE, M.ASME, PGCHET, FHEA, FIMarEST] is a Senior Lecturer (associate professor) in marine and coastal engineering, Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). Prior to joining QUB, he was a Research Scientist in MARINTEK (Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute) and SINTEF Ocean, Norway. Dr Karimirad has been researching in the field of marine structures and offshore technology with more than 10 years of research experience. He has a strong background in academia and industry; through Post-Doctoral and PhD research in offshore technology. Dr Karimirad was awarded his PhD in March 2011 in marine structures from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He had been employed previously by CeSOS (Centre for Ships and Ocean Structure), a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Norway. He has served as Post-Doctoral academic staff in CeSOS. His Post-Doctoral research was part of the NOWITECH (Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Technology) program. Moreover, he has been actively involved in advising of MSc and PhD students. In particular, during his career in CeSOS, he has been involved in supervision of four MSc and three PhD students. All the projects were related to offshore renewable energy structures covering different aspects such as designing of alternative offshore wind turbines, fatigue and ultimate limit state analyses, numerical modelling of wind turbine drivetrain, combining wave and wind energy devices as well as faults and transient events for wind turbines. Dr Karimirad obtained his MSc (2007) in mechanical engineering/ships structures from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran as well as his BSc (2005) in mechanical/marine engineering. In addition, he has worked in industry as a Senior-Engineer during his career in Aker-Kvaerner an EPCI (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation) company, Norway. Offshore renewable energy (ORE) structures and oil/gas technologies are among his interests; he has carried out different projects focusing on designing, analysing and testing of ORE structures in particular offshore wind turbines during over the past 10 years. Dr Karimirad has served as reviewer for several international journals and conferences. He served as editorial board member for Journal of Shipping and Ocean Engineering in the past and now he is serving as editorial board member of International Journal of Coastal and Offshore Engineering. In addition, he has been recently appointed as topic and session organiser at the International Conference on Ocean, Offshore & Arctic Engineering (OMAE) in 2017. His knowledge covers salient aspects of offshore mechanics, hydrodynamics, and structural engineering. The research results from the work conducted have been published in several technical reports, three theses, one book chapter, one book and twenty peer-reviewed scientific journal articles as well as thirty peer-reviewed conference papers. He has a clear record of research in the field of offshore renewable energy with more than 50 scientific publications relevant to the subject in the past 10 years. He has performed extensive research concerning both bottom-fixed and floating wind turbines in collaboration with known renewable energy research institutes such as NREL, DTU, Statoil, Technalia, Cener, Cres, University of Edinburgh, Exeter, etc. He has 782 citations as reported in Google scholar with an H-index of 18 and i10-index of 21. Dr Karimirad has carried out research in the dynamic response of offshore wind and tidal turbines, as well as wave energy converters subject to wave, current and wind action. He has been part of NOWITECH (Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Technology) for eight years and has carried out numerical simulations and ocean basin test preparation (through numerical analyses) for offshore wind applications. Moreover, he has been involved in several European collaborative projects such as H2020 LIFES50+, EU IPRWind, EU FP7 DTOcean. His role in H2020 LIFES50+ was scientific reviewer and technical quality assurer; he was the project manager at SINTEF Ocean (previously called MARINTEK) in the EU IPRWind project and he served as Research Scientist in the EU FP7 DTOcean.
