    Research Interests

I am a clinical researcher working as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine in the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast and Senior Lecturer in Queen's University Belfast.

My research programme has two themes; Discovery science and critical care big data.

    1. The discovery science theme is focussed on using human in vivo models of infection and inflammation in the pulmonary compartment. I use the inhaled lipopolysaccharide model of pulmonary inflammation and surgical one lung model of inflammation. My current reserach projects in these lines include

    a. Prevention HARP 2 study - UK multicentre trial aimed at reducing post-operative pulmonary and cardiac complications

    b. SELECT - Understanding the in vivo effects of e-cigarettes

    c. Role of T regulatory cells in acute respiratory distress syndrome

Current study in set up is "Hyperoxia mediated lung injury" to study the effect of liberal oxygen on pulmonary inflammation.

I have other grants in submission with a similar focus including the role of lung microbiome in increasing the risk of post-operative pulmonary infections.

I collaborate with the Centre for Experimental Medicine and externally with University of California San Francisco for these projects.

    2. The critical care big data theme is focussed on supporting clinicians using real time data analytics. There is also a significant component of behavioural sciences in this theme. I collaborate with ECIT, School for Mathematics and Physics and Centre for Public Health in this theme.
