    Research Interests

My research interests are in Early Modern Literature and Culture, focussing on the representation of mental pain in the literature from Montaigne to Milton. My PhD thesis explores cerebral sufferings in early modern English literature and culture. It encompasses multiple forms and addresses the strategies deployed to address mental disturbance. Employing linguistic-historicist methodologies, I consider a range of representations, embedding Shakespeare as one facet of a broader initiative. This thesis argues for early modern literature’s significance as a generative point in the development of contemporary discourses in medicine and psychology. I am supervised by Professor Mark Thornton Burnett and Dr Edel Lamb.
