    Research Statement

Sharon Nurse is a Senior Lecturer in Education. Her clinical background is in midwifery and neonatology. She practised midwifery for 5 years before her appointment as a clinical teacher in the NI College of Midwifery for 10 years.

Sharon was appointed as a teaching Fellow in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Queen’s University in 2001 where she developed two neonatal degree programmes. She also designed midwifery modules on transitional care and examination of the new-born; both crucial to the holistic care of mothers and babies in high and low risk maternity units in N. Ireland. Sharon teaches across the undergraduate and postgraduate programs within the School providing continuing education for nurses and midwives on a range of topics. Sharon is a link lecturer for a large maternity unit enabling her to maintain her midwifery clinical skills as well as supporting students and mentors in the hospital and community services. She has a particular interest in the care of small babies in the postnatal setting and new-born resuscitation. More recently as a Senior Lecturer, her experience has encompassed aspects of neonatal palliative care as well as the prevention and management of pain in premature and sick babies through education, research and numerous publications. As part of her recent MSc programme she researched the experiences of junior neonatal nurses providing end-of-life care for babies and their families. Through her involvement in specialist neonatal nursing groups and the N.I. Neonatal Network, Sharon has availed of inter-professional forums to advance neonatal education and practice to improve nursing practice and ultimately the care of babies and their families.
