    Interests

Siobhan has been a lecturer in Environmental and Civil Engineering since 2008. Her research interests include:

    • Risk assessment of contaminated sites (including human health risk assessment, the use of bioaccessibility testing and differentiating between geogenic and anthropogenic sources of contamination).
    • Remediation of carbon disulphide soil and groundwater contamination.
    • Environmental assessment, including life cycle assessment, for assessing impacts of novel concrete products.

Prior to starting her research at Queen's University Belfast, Siobhan worked within Kirk McClure Morton (now RPS Belfast), as a Chartered Engineer for 6 years, working on a wide variety of projects including contaminated land investigation, risk assessment and remediation, environmental impact assessment and design of waste management facilities, including landfill sites and recycling centres.

    Other

Siobhan is a member of the SWAN Self Assessment Team for the school.

    Teaching

Siobhan has extensively reviewed how sustainable development and environmental engineering is embedded within Civil Engineering undergraduate programmes.  She teaches the following modules to BEng/MEng Civil Engineering and MSc Environmental Engineering students:

    • Assessment of Environmental Impacts (CIV4039/7059 20 CATS points).  Siobhan teaches a series of lectures on environmental impact assessment and applies this in the context of selecting technologies for renewable energy generation.
    • Design and Communications 4 (CIV4012 40 CATS points) undertaken by final year MEng Civil Engineering students. Siobhan acts as a special consultant advising on environmental and sustainability issues.

Until 2016, Siobhan taught Contaminated land I (CIV8007/4020), a 10 CATS points module that introduced the concepts of contaminated land management and detailed how exploratory investigations and preliminary and generic risk assessments should be undertaken.
