    Interests

    Stephen is a Director of Education in the School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering.  He previously worked as a research assistant at the University of Ulster and as a planner for the Planning Service where he obtained experience in forward planning, development control and planning enforcement. As a member of both the RTPI and IPI he has sat on local and national panels and has been expert adviser to the RTPI Countryside Panel. Stephen was given the RTPI Seedcorn Research Award in 1999 and is a Research Associate of the Institute of Irish Studies.He was appointed as an honorary professor at the East China Institute of Technology in 2008. He has been advisor to the Minister for the Environment/ (subsequently Infrstructure) from 2010 until the collapse of the Assembly.

    Research Statement

    Research interests lie in the fields of planning law and planning practice and procedure. He is specifically interested in regulatory compliance and planning enforcement law. Other areas of interest include spatial planning, urban and rural development and contamination.

     

    Current research projects

     

    Spatial Planning and Networking (SPAN). This is a €4,600,000 project, funded by the European Union under Interreg IIIB and conducted with partners in Ireland, France and Belgium.

     

    He is currently preparing a research grant application for situationally based research linking theory to practice.
