    Research Interests

    Clinical Practice

My clinical academic focus is localised and advanced prostate cancer. I am very interested in hypofractionated radiotherapy as a means to escalate radiation dose to tumour and improve outcomes for men with locally advanced prostate cancer. This radiotherapy can be optimally delivered with High Dose Rate brachytherapy or with Image Guided Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR). I am the local PI on a clinical-translational investigator initiated study of prostate SABR and a further two studies in castrate resistant prostate cancer. My training and expertise in delivering these techniques was developed during a clinical research fellowship at University of Toronto. I lead the prostate SABR implementation group in NI and am a member of the New Technologies Steering Group. I am a member of the NCRI prostate Clinical Studies Group.

    Translational Research

I collaborate extensively with an interdisciplinary group of academics aimed at modelling modern radiotherapy treatments in vitro and in vivo.  We have been comparing different methods of delivering high dose hypofractionated radiotherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.

I am also interested in the utilisation of nanotechnology to enhance the effects of radiation therapy.

I am post-graduate tutor to 3rd-5th year medical students. I lead an expanding prostate cancer SSC for 3rd year medical students. Feedback from the students has been very positive. I have provided clinical teaching for 3rd and 4th year medical students and clinical oncology registrars. I lecture to core surgical trainees on ‘Oncology for Surgeons’. I also lecture to second medical students taking SSCs. I have been external examiner for the final part of Radiation Oncology training Ireland.

    Charitable Involvement

I have been involved in a number of fund-raising endeavours including running a marathon for Friends of the Cancer. I have fund-raised for Movember/PCUK and CRUK. I have been a keynote speaker for Macmillan presenting to patients and relatives on ‘New hope for the treatment of Advanced Prostate Cancer.’
