    Research Interests

    My research interest concentrates mainly on Science education: with a specific focus on scientific literacy and the importance of literacy in science learning. This has concentrated on the area of science in the media and the consequent impact on the public response to science. Another research interest is in the area of teacher education.

    The research profile shows publications in the areas of educational management and science education bringing together articles in a number of high profile journals, book chapters, books and teacher handbooks. These are of interest to education students, teachers and teacher educators.

    ‘Developing Scientific Literacy’ (Open University Press 2007) was reviewed very positively in the International Journal of Science Education and in 2010 was selected by the Ministry of Education in Spain for translation into Spanish. 

    More recently book chapters, in Communicating science to the public: opportunities and challenges for the Asia-Pacific region and in Contextualizing teaching to improve learning: The case of science and geography, have extended and applied this research into more global and further interdisciplinary areas and contexts.

    My contribution to science teacher education is evidenced in research-based support for professional practice; for example ASE publications ‘Science Newswise 2’ and contribution to ‘ASE Guide To Secondary Science Education’

    My research profile shows sustained engagement with the international science education research community. Both peer reviewed and invited presentations have been made in the United States (NARST and NSTA): New Zealand NZARE;); Malaysia (World STE); Europe (EERA and ESERA) and UK (BERA and ASE) conferences.
